Year 11s did their first lesson about volcanoes today... Their challenge was to draw/brain storm what they knew already! These are the results.... They then had a lesson learning about shield and composite volcanoes and tomorrow will have an exam question to test them! Good luck and well done girls!

Nigeria's plastic bottle house.

Year 9 are studying about sustainable development - what could be more sustainable than this new house that is being built alongside 25 others in Nigeria. Bullet proof, cool and eco-friendly as it is recycled used bottles, this house in my opinion is a cracking example of a sustainable development in all senses! It also employs local people, is helping children in the future by enabling them access to an education as well as reducing carbon footprints!!!!!!! All in all, I think this is great!

Years 9, 10 and 11.... what are your thoughts?

Year 10 and 11 you will be studying a unit called Extreme Climates at somepoint soon, this series will help you understand a little about colder climates and may give you some good basic knowledge following on from the Pole to Pole unit you studied when you were in year 9!

Give blood...

On Thursday after school I will be trundling off home... but before that I will be off to give blood. In the developed world 38.1 people per 1000 donate blood which helps thousands of people survive accidents and many operations. In the developing world there are only 2.3 donations per 1000 people (WHO 2010). This has ultimately has upsetting consequences as I am sure you can imagine.

My friends brother is getting set to compete in the Aarhus Half Iron man on July 3rd. None of the three who are participating have completed a triathlon of any sort before... however I'm led to believe that they are a determined bunch! Please, if you have any spare pennies it would be great if you could sponsor them! I know you don't know them but it is a very worthy cause and if we can help them achieve their goal we will be proving to be very active citizens making a difference!

Whilst I can't help people in Malawi, I can raise awareness here and hopefully some of you may be able to ask friends/relatives etc to give blood wherever they might be!

My mother, my queen

A poem written by Janani, a year 9 student who formed part of the winning group from our YPI projects this year. Rebecca, Janani, Deborah and Samira won £3000 that they donated to Womens Aid Bexley last month. They have been invited to perform this emotional and fantastic poem at the Insitute of Philanthropy celebration event at the end of this month. Today they we're able to work with Musa Okwinga who is a professional poetry reader and these are the results. I am sure you will agree.... amazing!

He hit and slapped her in front of my face,
Causing a riot and taking her grace.
She’s never the one to start a big scene,
But this scene involved her- my mother, my queen.

I peered through my fingers to see my mum cry,
She looked straight at me and whispered “goodbye”.
Her eyes slowly closed for my world to turn black,
I finally knew I quickly lost track.

Flashes of that day could be seen through my eyes,

Nyiragongo Volcano eruption!!!

I am Roberta, the Geographical reporter for BBC news and it is nine years after the volcanic eruption here in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the centre of the continent of Africa, which happened on January 17th 2002. I feel bad that I was not here to witness this huge disaster, but I have the people of the city of Goma to create the storyline for me. Here, I can see the after effect that this massive disaster has had on the city of Goma.

This is the part of my job that I love, the Geographical part. I love using Geographical key terms! Anyway, back to my blog.

The volcanic eruption occurred in Mount Nyiragongo. What triggered the volcano to erupt was a constructive plate boundary in the African Rift Valley.

Many people in this country have been left with a scar of homelessness, loss of family, food, and water, which are the most important factors of their living. 100 people died in this tragedy, mostly from poisonous gas and getting trapped in lava. 40% of the city was destroyed, with the volcanic eruption at the speed of 40 miles per hour.

Let’s set the scene here. I have John Seach here with me, who is an explorer, and he actually interestingly enough, took a journey to the top of Mount Nyiragongo in 2008, to see for himself how the volcanic eruption occurred and what triggered it. John is back here especially to tell me what he witnessed six years ago.

So, John, what exactly happened here on Thursday 17th January? ‘Well, first let me thank you for having me, Roberta. Well, local people told me that first off they could feel shaking of the ground, and that’s when the eruption started. It looked like very hot and runny basalt lava poured out of Mount Nyiragongo surrounded them. They had been told before from scientists that had predicted a future volcanic eruption coming, but they did not believe it, as they had witnessed small activity in the past of the volcano, but not as much as it did on the day of the eruption’.

‘The local people were took into surprise, and the government were getting people evacuated immediately, but seeing as Goma is in one of the LEDC countries in the continent of Africa, the government did not have enough transport and resources to evacuate every single one of the people, so they sent them to refugee camps, but even then, not everyone got a space in the refugee camps as they were told it was too full. So, eventually, people died out of frustration of waiting and lack of food and water’.

Recently in my Geography lessons we have started learning about Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions, we’ve looked at a number of Volcanoes, such as Mount St Helens and Mount Nyiragongo.

But for now I am going to focus on telling you about Mount Nyiragongo, because that’s the Volcano I learnt about today. Mount Nyiragongo is placed on the African Rift Valley – Central Africa and is placed on a Constructive plate Boundary, which has been active for many years before the 2002 eruption, scientists say there has been at least 34 eruptions since the late 19th Century. But because of this particular eruption on January 17th 2002, Mount Nyiragongo caused devastation across the City of Goma – Democratic Republic of Congo, a country already suffering from poverty (LEDC).

This caused rivers of molten lava, travelling at 40mph down the mountain towards the helpless locals, which was 1000 metres wide, and flowed 20km into the city of Goma. This destroyed 40% of the city, causing the residents to flee to Rwanda, to search for refugee camps. Before hand 400,000 people were evacuated due to warnings, but 100,000 were left behind, which caused over 100 citizens to die – mostly from poisonous gas and getting overcome by a river of molten lava. The lava triggered a number of Earthquakes, which then destroyed many more homes, in the end 14 villages (equivalent too 12,500 homes) were destroyed.

This put a massive strain on More Economically Developed Countries (MEDC’s) to help Goma and surrounding areas out with aspects like money, and health care, due to so little health care and resources even before the eruption. After a number of months, the Worlds governments had raised $35 million to help the many sufferers out. Also the United Nations sent in 260 tonnes of food, to help refugees and people who had nothing, and had lost their homes and loved ones.

All of this could have been a lot less destructive; if the Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDC’s) had a lot more knowledge on volcanoes, and the whole Geology side of Geography. This could have also helped predicting this Volcano a lot earlier and may make the communications between other countries better. Unfortunately they do not have the resources to do so, especially the money.

I hope by reading this it has raised a lot more Awareness towards Volcanic Eruptions.

Rethink Refugees - Najeeba's story

As Najeeba observes, "leaving your country for good is one of the hardest decisions you can be forced to make. It means a break with all that you know -- your family, your livelihood, your friends. All the familiar sights, sounds, smells and tastes..."

Najeeba knows this only too well. As a young girl, many of her relatives and friends were killed by the Taliban.

With her parents, she fled the country. They were eventually crammed into a tiny fishing boat with 100 other people. Many days later, the Australian Navy finally escorted them to safety.

But Najeeba and her family were in for a shock. When they saw the barbed wire at Derby processing centre, they thought the Taliban had tricked them.
Life inside was tough. Finally, after months of uncertainty, the family was granted refugee status.

Now a student, Najeeba deeply appreciates the help she has received, saying: "many people have been like angels to us, full of caring and compassion. When people know my story, they always understand and I think feel proud to help us..."

Hussain recalls his earlier life: "in Afghanistan, I was a shepherd and a farmer. We had a small house, very simple. We slept on the floor. Mostly we were happy with our life. All we really wanted was enough food and safety..."

But the Taliban made life very complicated. When Hussain refused to reveal his eldest son's whereabouts, they threatened to kill him.

He had to leave his village behind without delay. He also knew that his wife and children would be much safer once he was gone.

He departed for distant Indonesia -- but was unable to stay and eventually found himself aboard a crowded boat to Australia.

When our Navy took him to Darwin, he finally felt safe. Although the Woomera processing centre was a bleak place, he found its guards to be "kind and good people".

After six years of uncertainty, Hussain and his family finally got their visas. They all love this country.

As he says, "Australia is the most beautiful place in my life. It is the first time my children are safe. It is the first place we have slept well for the whole night, without fear and bomb blasts..."

Visualising friendships - Social Network Mapping

Good evening!

I am sure you all use social networking (facebook, twitter etc etc!).

Here is a map which shows the locality of friendship - i.e. where people live relative to friends on facebook. Paul Butler was interested in seeing how geography and political borders affected where people lived relative to their friends. The lines you see in the in the map show real human relationships. Each line might represent a friendship made while travelling, a family member abroad, or an old college friend pulled away by the various forces of life.

A very interesting map that shows how Geography links to Social networking.... not just grid references and rivers! ;)

When Andy came to visit on friday, he talked to us about his trip to the South Pole and his inspiration. He talked about the harsh conditions that he lived in and the hard work and training that he had to do.

Andy entered a competition for the expedition. He had to do mental and physical tests and the mental test was to ensure that he wasn't crazy.

He also told us about the dangers of going there.

I took everything into consideration and want to go on an expedition myself. His speech really inspired me and I really enjoyed it!

Welcome back to Eltham Hill's Geography Blog - I'm sorry I have not updated for so long. So much to do, so little time to do it!

Trading Game...

Sorry for the loooonnnnnngggg amount of time it has been since I last posted. It has been a very hectic few months. Now that year 11 have left us ( insert sad face!) I have a little more time on my hands.

Today was the day of the Trading Game! I ran this down at our second site with the whole of year 9! Not all in one go, we had 3 sessions with between 60-70 girls in each session! It was a fab day, exhausting but Year 9 really were well behaved!

Trying to get 60 screaming, competing girls took its toll by session 3, luckily I had Hayley to use her LOUD voice to quieten the rest of her group down! Naideene spent the whole two hours trying to suss me out and work out how she could make more mone, and Olachi stayed behind to talk a little more about the game as she had enjoyed it so much!!!!!!! This definitely is why I came into teaching.

In the images you can see students getting stuck in, either banking their shapes or trading items. I have never seen year 9 quite so focused! Some students, really surprised me!

Thank you to year 9 who worked so well today - I hope you enjoyed it! And thanks to EHX and Ms Sanders who helped me set up and have a awesome day!

Haiti Earthquake - Imaginative Writing. Deja's post.

I set my year 7's a challenge to write a blog post (diary entry) as if they had been in the Haiti earthquake that happened last month. As I am marking them I am going to put some up here. Here is the first one - Deja in 7L - fab imaginative writing!

"I see lots of buildings, the traffic comes to a stop as they all one by one crash into the cats. Suddenly all the shouting and beeping stops and all is silent. Gradually several cries for help underneath the rubble are to be heard. The lucky people who survived come out running out of their homes, blood running down their faces, or down their nose. No-one knows what to do, everyone is in shock. A few minutes later the rescue aid (firemen) start to listen for cries and shouting. Only a few have survived. The families of the people that didn't make it are mourning bitterly, shaking the dead person to wake up, but they know it's the end. All around people are praying, some praying for the impossible. You can hear nothing but crying but also see smiling faces on the ones who have survived. A little bit later medical help arrives, people gather around for medical attention. With tears and blood running down their faces the youngsters who don't know what's going on, the adults trying to comfort them. While at the same time they are crying, wondering what's next. It has been a truly tragic day, who knows what tomorrow might bring. Suddenly an aftershock occurs, this provokes the whole town as they all run around like they don't know what to do, but it's true they don't know what to do. No one does."

Chile Earthquake... 8.8 on the Richter scale

There has been an earthquake in Chile which has measured at 8.8 on the Richter Scale..

Please keep an eye on the BBC news website for further details. So far the loss of life has been estimated at 47.

It occurred at 6.34am this morning, and has triggered Tsunami waves off effecting other countries.

On Wednesday the 10th of February we have a very unusual visitor come to see us year 9's in our lesson. Because we have been learning about climate change, the south pole and Antarctica, Andrew Ledger came to tell us what is was like when he visited Antarctica. He was a very funny man and told us lots of interesting facts about when he was there. He showed us some pictures of him there and told us some of the stories and side effects of being there. i.e. Being sick every day, having un-warmed up meals and stuff. Overall the session was very interesting and funny which was a real treat and privilege to have him come in to see us. Thank you Andrew and Miss Udy

5. Snowy Weather - we only had 1 Snow day which of course is a good thing for schools, but brilliant for Geography. Especially as year 9 are studying Antarctica and even London was colder than parts of Antarctica!
6. David Attenborough's program on Can the earth cope with it's increasing population?
7. A fantastic resource that explores the Arctic.
8.Google maps is still an endless source of entertainment for me!!!!!
9. Down under in Australia, or Home or Abroad - Oz. This is a great program for the GCSE year 10 students.

Hi!

Its been a long time, i know! Since you last heard from me we had our 6 weeks summer holiday... Ireland, Spain and France were my chosen destinations this year and I had an awesome time! But, 2 weeks back at school, a stinking cold has struck and tirdness for all has set in! But, above all that I have had some fantastic lessons!!!!!!!!!

Yr 9 are studying the equator - check out Eden TV if you have sky - it is Simon Reeves season!

He has done some great work and travelled to many many places that I can only dream of going!!!!!!

Year 8 are looking at the Geography of our stuff and recently looked at all the countries a laptop is made and assembled in - our information told us it was 18 countries for 1 laptop!

Yr 7 are studying festivals - nearly finished learning about contour lines! It is model time - I will post some pictures of the best!

Year 11 are doing coursework - they were fantastic on thier trip and behaved fab... Ms Sanders and myself really were proud of the work they completed on the day and the fact that they walked about 5 miles in total and really only complained in the last 1/2 hour!!!!!!!!!!

Year 10 have settled in well - we are a small group this year and have started the new GCSE - lots of information but they are coping so far!

So, that's it for now... I will endeavour to update and post up more information asap!

Yesterday was the funeral for Michael Jackson. I did watch it on the TV and I did shed a small tear, especially when his daughter spoke. I grew up with Michael Jackson music, as many thousands of people around the world did.

This video made me think about what year 9 have been doing at the moment. We have been looking at teenage knife and gun crime and yesterday was the Festival of Change where we had a fashion show and speakers corner amoungst other things. But I felt that this video was of huge relevance.

I know it is perhaps hugely cheesy...... but sometimes it works....

Ok, so today is my birthday, and I had an unexpected lesson that has made me soooooo happy!

9Y4 last week looked at Gun and Knife Crime in youths and this linked in with out Geography of Conflict unit of work. I guess it could be seen more as Citizenship but I thought it was something that may spark thier interest. I was never to guess how much tho! This class has totally been inspired by this, so much so they are currently writing letters to Alexander Rose (STOP campaginer) and are more fired up about this than I have ever seen a class before! It has totally reminded me what teaching is about!

The border was last changed in 1861 when Italy became a unified state, but this time the shift is being blamed on climate change.

Blood, Sweat and Takeaways....

Year 8 will be familiar with the above slogan.... for the rest of you - blood, sweat and t-shirts may be familiar!

Last term we studied the Geography of my stuff - we looked at both food and clothes.

The 4 programme series of blood, sweat and takeaways was once again held with 6 young British people from across the country with varying opinions on cheap food and the food industry.

We are spoilt for choice, and I wonder how many of you visit the chicken and chip shop on your way home, or how many of you love prawns, or how many times a week we all eat rice that may have come from south-east Asia?

This programme shows the 6 youngsters catch, harvest and process food products we take advantage of every week. Tuna, Prawns, Rice and Chicken industries are highlighted, but we know this is only a small proportion. The 6 yougsters eat, sleep and live with the food workers from Indonesia and Thailand and experience the real life these people live. The average wage is around £3 per day. Could you survive on that?

Start of the last summer half term!

Good afternoon,

Today saw the first year 11 exam - the DME. I managed to catch up with most of the girls at the end and most were happy with how it went! Hopefully that is a good sign... half the GCSE is now complete (25% DME and 25% coursework!) so well done girls!

Year 7 are finishing off Scary Planet and will be moving onto Coasts.
Year 8 are finishing off Geography of sport and will do a few lessons on Energy and being Climate Cops!
Year 9 have started a unit that carries across all the humanities subjects called Peace, Power and Protest. We will be looking at the Geography of Conflict, mapping it and finding out about causes as well as the Art of Peace!

Year 10 as ever continue to make me laugh with their babble but are doing great and just finishing off Tourism so hopefully we can get out on our fieldwork before the summer hols for our coursework!

Thats the update for now.... I will continue to update as and when I can so keep your eyes peeled! :)

Miss Chandler was telling me today about a year 10 lesson that she did where she incorporated Twitter. I do have a twitter account, although to date I have found no real use for this! However, the citizenship twitter idea really struck me as fantastic!

UK man lands 'world's best job'

Ben Southall, 34, a charity fundraiser from Petersfield, Hampshire has been appointed the new caretaker of an Australian tropical island, a six-month position described as "the best job in the world".
He was up against over 34,000 applicants!

Petersfield is my home town so of course I am very pleased!

Good afternoon!

Its the end of the first week back after half term and everyone is tired!!!!! I must say thought that all my classes have been fab this week!

Yr 8 and 9 have both been studying the Olympics that are happening in 2012 in Stratford. I will be loading up power points and sheets later on today/over the weekend!

Homework for all year 8's and 9's taught by Miss Udy:
Write a 200 word news report for Newsround. How will the Olympics affect young people in Britain? You can use arguments for and against.

Good afternoon - third post of the day ..... you are lucky!

As year 11 are well aware (!) it is coming up to that time of year. I posted once before with some revision techniques..... here is a fabulous website that gives lots of good general advice

During the holidays there are revision sessions being run by most subjects between the 6-9th April. Different subjects will be using different techniques but it's important to find ways you enjoy and like. We will give you different ideas to trial out - Geography will be including making up songs, (i did this at university and will never forget my community based management song!) mind maps, maps with colour coded information and bullet point cards!

I think most importantly try to find things you enjoy doing - revision is hard at the best of times and it is about finding a way that works for you!

South Downs Park agreed!

Finally, nearly exactly 60 years after it was first suggested, the South Downs has been made into a National Park.

It will become England's 9th national park and covers part of Sussex and Hampshire.

It means that the area is going to have a high level of protection, and it means that the area (which is beautiful!) will be protected for ever so that future generations can visit the wonderful rolling chalk hills and views that I grew up with.

It will boost the local economy bringing in tourists and businesses to the area. There will be more economic help for landowners and farmers, along with policies to encourage jobs and affordable housing have been promised. There are lots of poeple who agree with it, lots of people who don't for various reasons.

It is going to cover 630 sq miles, and it already attractions millions of visitors a year to sites such as the Seven Sisters, Arundel and the Chalk Downland hills like Butser.

Among the important wildlife species that can be seen are Barbastelle and Bechtein Bats in the Westrern Weald, Rare woodland butterflies, in the rich areas of heathland we see Woodlarks and Dartford Warbler. Woolmer Forest is one of the few sites in Britain that is home to UK reptile species including the sand lizard and smooth snake. The tracts of chalk downland are home to important butterfly species and plants such as the musk orchid, rock rose, rild thyme, harebell, common-spotted orchid, early purple orchid and juniper.

I think it's great news, and having done research into this at university and at a-level I am very pleased it finally happend!

Forest Fires burning in Nepal

The forest fires that burned unusually viciously in many of Nepal's national parks and conserved areas this dry season have left conservationists (people who look after the environment) worrying if climate change played a role.

In the Himalayan region, hardly anything could be done because of the difficult geography - i.e. relief of the land! Forest fires in Nepal's jungles and protected areas are not uncommon during the dry season between October and January.
Most of the fires come about as a consequence of the "slash and burn" practice that farmers employ for better vegetation and agricultural yields.

But this time the fires remained out of control even in the national parks in the Himalayan region where the slash and burn practice is uncommon.

In some of the protected areas, the fires flared up even after locals and officials tried to put them out for several days.

Winters have become drier and drier, so severe that pine trees in the Himalayan region are thoroughly dry even on the top, which means even a spark is enough to set them on fire. (When I was at summer camp in America we had a song for the pine trees - I'll try and find it!)

Some of the forest fires have stopped, some are still going. It has been the driest winter on record and who is to say what will happen. Keep your eyes peeled for news on global warming and climate change..... perhaps in lessons we can look in to whether or not events like hurricanes and tornadoes have happened more and if there is a link with global warming! (Like in the day after tomorrow!)

G20..... :-/

It's all over the news, it's called the G20! Even I was getting a little confused and was trying to work out how or even if it linked to the G8.

The G20 is a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 economies: 19 of the world's largest national economies, plus the European Union (EU). Collectively, the G-20 economies comprise 85% of global GNP, 80% of world trade and two-thirds of the world population.

The G-20 is a forum for cooperation and consultation on matters relating to the international financial system. It studies, reviews, and promotes discussion among key industrial and emerging market countries of policy issues pertaining to the promotion of international financial stability, and seeks to address issues that go beyond the responsibilities of any one organisation.

The G8 (The group of Eight - used to be G6) is a place where governments of eight nations of the northwen hemispehere: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States; in addition, the European Union is represented within the G8.

Lately, both France and the United Kingdom have expressed a desire to expand the group and include five developing countries, referred to as the Outreach Five (O5): Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa. These countries have participated as guests in previous meetings, which are sometimes called G8+5.

Japan held the G8 presidency in 2008, Italy is the 2009 president, and Canada will be president in 2010. France held the first presidency in 1975.

The G8 meetings bring together ministers responsible for various different things to discuss issues of mutual or global concern. The range of topics include health, law enforcement, labour, economic and social development, energy, environment, foreign affairs, justice and interior, terrorism and trade. There are also a separate set of meetings known as the "G8+5", created during the 2005 Gleneagles, Scotland summit, that is attended by finance and energy ministers from all eight member countries in addition to the five "Outreach Countries": Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa.

The last time we held the G8 in the UK was the 6-8th July in Scotland. On the second day of the meeting, suicide bombers killed over 50 people on the London Underground and a bus.

These events have always caused an International hype with world media focusing on extensive lobbying by advocacy groups and street demonstrations by activists.

As I type this it is 3 days, 7 hours and 52 minutes until Earth Hour starts!
Please, for all Eltham Hill Geographers - persuade your friends, relatives across the world to take part in this! There are loads of places taking part, I will be in my house in London, my sister in Oxford!

Good afternoon,

Sorry it has been so long since my last post - things seem to all come in one go! I finally found 5 minutes to sit down and write!

Last Thursday Google Street View shot into the news... I have to say I am a fan! I did spend an hour looking at my nans house, my house (where my housemate is in the window when the pic was taken!), my best friends house (her daughter was throwing a trantrum on the street!) and generally looking to see what was on there!

Where's Wally? A favourite childrens book even managed to get a Wally somewhere in London!
As well as a marriage proposal, two kinghts fighting, some breaking into a house and so on!

Google’s camera cars covered more than 22,369 miles of UK roads in their effort to map towns and major cities, including London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Oxford. Already, web users have been scouring the maps to find quirky or unusual sights, including a broken-down Google car being photographed by another camera car, and Banksy graffiti.

Red Nose Day.... Comic Relief

Dear all,

Its 9.30 on Friday the 13th.... I don't know about you, but I am watching Red Nose Day on the BBC (yes, Miss Udy has no where better to be on a friday night!)

Be funny for money, wearing Pj's to work and being silent (Paige!) are three of many things being done across the country today to raise money!

Many of you have been studying Make Poverty History, many of you have had me telling you to watch it etc but seriously, Sainsburys just were announced at making £9 million pounds and the grand total was announced at £29,748,187... that is a whopping amount of money!

I know lots of you donated, and I sincerly hope your watching this thinking about how lucky we are here, everytime the stories come on I manage to get tears rolling down my cheeks - i certainly do feel very lucky.

So, it's Smithy from Gavin and Stacey! I think he is hillarious so I am going to watch!

What happens in the local area for the elderly in our community? Does the school do anything?

This evening on BBC1 Panorama looks at a proposed amnesty for hundreds of thousands of long-standing illegal immigrants, offering them the right to work and full citizenship.

London mayor Boris Johnson is in favour of the idea, and 93 MPs from across the country support it.

But it is a big ask with the UK in the grip of a credit crunch, and amid protests calling for British jobs for British workers.

Good evening! Make sure you keep an eye on the comic relief campaign this week! The Mount Kilimanjaro climb documentary will be shown 12th March (this Thursday) at 8pm! Should be a good watch and as always has Geographical links!

Earth Hour - 28th of March!

Calling all Geographers..... make sure you set a reminder on your phones/calenders/diaries. 28th March and 8.30pm is Earth hour where you should be turning off your lights for the whole hour!

Get those candles and torches out, switch out all those lights!
Some of the world’s most famous landmarks, including Nelson’s Column, the Forth Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Sydney Opera House, and Table Mountain in Cape Town, will unite with icons such as the Merlion in Singapore, Hong Kong’s Symphony of Lights and the Shanghai Hong Kong New World Tower – all going dark for one hour, at 8.30pm on 28 March. The London Eye, too, will be dimmed for the hour. Even Bluewater has signed up!

We will be trying to get Eltham Hill on the list of schoolsto sign up to!

Fieldwork at BEECHE

Good evening!

So after a busy day yesterday with year 9 options I am finally getting around to uploading some images!

On Tuesday, myself and two year 8 pupils visited BEECHE (Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms) with other schools from the Bromley area and completed various different activities with the BEECHE staff, RGS staff and the Bromley Geography network staff. We have been working together to try and change the opinion of Geography fieldwork and this will have a huge impact on how we run fieldwork and the type of activities we do. Tilly and Shelly (and all the students from the other schools) really enjoyed the day and will be creating a post soon giving you their view on the day!

We arrived at 9.30 to be met with biscuits and juice and we quickly moved onto some Geography Bingo! The students quickly got involved and really seemed to enjoy it! The groups were introduced to their task and we went outside and started collecting materials for our Journey string, and taking photos of different areas. Some of the shots were amazing, particulary this one by Tilly!

When we got back the students brought together a list of words that came to mind when they were standing out side. With these words the groups came up with Haiku's. Again, the standard was brilliant, the groups really were creative!

The two following Haiku's were by the groups that Tilly and Shelly were in:

Freedom Calm Tranqui,

Tweet tweet birds flying free, calm,

Feathers floating pray,

(Shelly, Steven, Georgina, Roshni)

In the walled garden,

Happy and free apple tree,

All's quiet in spring.

(Lianne, Robert, Jamie, Tilly, Daragh)

Each group chose a favourite photo and then went back outside to start making thier perfume pot's! Making a natural perfume that would represent their favourite place! Each student also used natural materials to make a nature pallet and had to stand quietly listening for noise and making a sound map.

The groups then set about making thier advert campagins! They all worked fantastically and the groups produced some excellent results!See below!

We then broke for lunch, yummy sandwiches and cake provided by BEECHE! Once we had full tummies and had our tea we moved onto lookat the biodiversity of the large pond within the grounds of High Elms. The students were shown how to take samples from the pond and off we trundled with our nets, trays and buckets! Oh, and the all important identification sheets!

Each group got stuck in, Tilly suprised me by going to a seperate pond to look on her own! She had a huge smile on her face all afternoon!

We even found Leeches, funny wood animals and ducks!

All the students got really involved and seemed to enjoy being outside!

Tilly and Shelly didn't stop talking the whole way home and we have been invited back to do more work with the RGS and the Bromley Geography network!

RGS and the BGN will be eventually posting up images and details of what we did, as soon as I know they have done it, I shall post a link to it! The work that we are doing is really exiciting and I (and hopefully Tilly, Shelly and Sarah - who couldn't make it sadly) are looking forward to working more on this fieldwork project!

Hi! So this is the first of many hopefully!!!!! I finally, ater 2 hours worked out how to do this! Very complicated but I know now! So this is a powerpoint from my current year 8 scheme of work called The Geography of my stuff.
