On tv...
At the moment there are loads of programmes on that will help you! On iPlayer there is a series called Why Poverty, it's a 7 part programme that helps revise and study for unit 1. There is also a programme with Simon Reeves in it again about Cuba that should be interesting!
I'm sure there are others, if you know of any feel free to comment on this post and share your knowledge!!!!!
If you have an iPad, I stumbled across a new Edexcel app the other day which allows you to download past papers and mark schemes, we are the GCSE 2009 and we are the B specification in Geography if you want to look at it.
Other than that, I know I've said it time and time again but I will try to update this a bit more regularly! Fingers crossed

Olympics 2012
It's me again! It has been a long time since I updated properly. I have recently downloaded a blooging app on my iPad at school, so I am going to try and blog a bit more often. I'm not sure how many people read my blog but it's a good place to keep links of useful pages etc.
So, my attention has been drawn to this video on the BBC all out the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. You could say it is about the good, the bad and white elephant!
It is an interesting watch, and we can only hope that London 2012 won't suffer the same fate of producing a £9 billion white elephant! I'm sure we won't, but interesting none-the-less.

Year 9 homework - mapping poverty
In class you hve been creating your own chloropleth maps and you have been analysing them.
Your homework this week is to use this map and answer a 4 mark exam question. We will mark it in class next lesson.
Figure 1: Proportional map showing the proportion of all people living on less than or equal to US$2 a day.
Question: Using figure 1, describe and explain what the map shows. (4 marks)
Hint: Absolute poverty is defined as living on the equivalent of US$2 a day or less. In 2002, 43% of the world population lived on this little. This money has to cover the basics of food, shelter and water. Medicines, new clothing, and school books would not be on the priority list.
When almost an entire population lives on this little, it is unsurprising if undernourishment is high, education levels are low, and life expectancy short. In both Nigeria and Mali, 9 of every ten people survives on less than US$2 a day. South America has a relatively small poor population, yet 39 million people have less than US$2 a day in Brazil.

Year 11 volcano work today....
Year 11s did their first lesson about volcanoes today... Their challenge was to draw/brain storm what they knew already! These are the results.... They then had a lesson learning about shield and composite volcanoes and tomorrow will have an exam question to test them! Good luck and well done girls!

Innovation?
Nigeria's plastic bottle house.
Year 9 are studying about sustainable development - what could be more sustainable than this new house that is being built alongside 25 others in Nigeria. Bullet proof, cool and eco-friendly as it is recycled used bottles, this house in my opinion is a cracking example of a sustainable development in all senses! It also employs local people, is helping children in the future by enabling them access to an education
as well as reducing carbon footprints!!!!!!! All in all, I think this is great!
Years 9, 10 and 11.... what are your thoughts?

Frozen Planet
Dear Year 9, 10 and 11.
The programme that is on BBC 1 tonight at 9pm is an easy to watch programme that will help you with your studies this year. Year 9 you will be studying a unit called Pole to Pole - this will give you some info that may help you! Year 10 and 11 you will be studying a unit called Extreme Climates at somepoint soon, this series will help you understand a little about colder climates and may give you some good basic knowledge following on from the Pole to Pole unit you studied when you were in year 9!

Give blood...
On Thursday after school I will be trundling off home... but before that I will be off to give blood. In the developed world 38.1 people per 1000 donate blood which helps thousands of people survive accidents and many operations. In the developing world there are only 2.3 donations per 1000 people (WHO 2010). This has ultimately has upsetting consequences as I am sure you can imagine.
My friends brother is getting set to compete in the Aarhus Half Iron man on July 3rd. None of the three who are participating have completed a triathlon of any sort before... however I'm led to believe that they are a determined bunch! Please, if you have any spare pennies it would be great if you could sponsor them! I know you don't know them but it is a very worthy cause and if we can help them achieve their goal we will be proving to be very active citizens making a difference!
Whilst I can't help people in Malawi, I can raise awareness here and hopefully some of you may be able to ask friends/relatives etc to give blood wherever they might be!
