Year 9 homework - mapping poverty

In class you hve been creating your own chloropleth maps and you have been analysing them.



Your homework this week is to use this map and answer a 4 mark exam question. We will mark it in class next lesson.
Figure 1: Proportional map showing the proportion of all people living on less than or equal to US$2 a day.

Question: Using figure 1, describe and explain what the map shows. (4 marks)

Hint: Absolute poverty is defined as living on the equivalent of US$2 a day or less. In 2002, 43% of the world population lived on this little. This money has to cover the basics of food, shelter and water. Medicines, new clothing, and school books would not be on the priority list.
When almost an entire population lives on this little, it is unsurprising if undernourishment is high, education levels are low, and life expectancy short. In both Nigeria and Mali, 9 of every ten people survives on less than US$2 a day. South America has a relatively small poor population, yet 39 million people have less than US$2 a day in Brazil.

Visualising friendships - Social Network Mapping

Good evening!

I am sure you all use social networking (facebook, twitter etc etc!).

Here is a map which shows the locality of friendship - i.e. where people live relative to friends on facebook. Paul Butler was interested in seeing how geography and political borders affected where people lived relative to their friends. The lines you see in the in the map show real human relationships. Each line might represent a friendship made while travelling, a family member abroad, or an old college friend pulled away by the various forces of life.

A very interesting map that shows how Geography links to Social networking.... not just grid references and rivers! ;)

Tube Stikes...

Have they affected you or your family? Geography really is around us... surfing the internet this evening I stumbled across another map that shows who stayed at home, who cycled or walked to work instead and who used public transport.



As year 8 and 9 are well aware maps are an important aspect of Geography, year 7 are beginning to use thier map reading skills more and more!

Google Street View

Good afternoon,

Sorry it has been so long since my last post - things seem to all come in one go! I finally found 5 minutes to sit down and write!

Last Thursday Google Street View shot into the news... I have to say I am a fan! I did spend an hour looking at my nans house, my house (where my housemate is in the window when the pic was taken!), my best friends house (her daughter was throwing a trantrum on the street!) and generally looking to see what was on there!

Where's Wally? A favourite childrens book even managed to get a Wally somewhere in London!
As well as a marriage proposal, two kinghts fighting, some breaking into a house and so on!

Google’s camera cars covered more than 22,369 miles of UK roads in their effort to map towns and major cities, including London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Oxford. Already, web users have been scouring the maps to find quirky or unusual sights, including a broken-down Google car being photographed by another camera car, and Banksy graffiti.
